About BOOK files
A .BOOK file is a highly fragmented extension primarily used to store document structures, layouts, or databases. Its most common application is as an Adobe FrameMaker book project file. In this context, it acts as a binder that organizes multiple FM (FrameMaker) files into a single, cohesive publication like a technical manual. Alternatively, .BOOK files are generated by consumer photo book software like CEWE Photoworld or Blurb BookSmart to save photo album layouts, and by chess engines (like PolyGlot or ChessBase) to store opening move databases. The biggest disadvantage of the .BOOK format is its strict proprietary nature. If it is a FrameMaker or photo book file, it rarely contains the actual images or text; instead, it relies on absolute file paths to local assets. This means if you send the file to someone else without the linked resources, it is completely useless. Furthermore, opening these files usually requires a costly subscription to Adobe software or the installation of specific, heavy photo book applications. They cannot be opened natively by modern web browsers or standard text editors. To overcome these limitations, you must convert the file to a standard format. For printing, archiving, or sharing, convert the file to PDF/A. If you are dealing with a chess opening book, converting to PGN or plain TXT is the most pragmatic solution. If you need to extract elements for web use, targeting WebP or JPG is ideal.
