About ALS files
The .ALS file extension primarily identifies an Ableton Live Set, the standard project file used by the music production software Ableton Live. In less common cases, it functions as a 3D scene file for Autodesk Alias or Arnold Renderer, or as a formal specification model for Alloy Analyzer.
The major disadvantage of an .ALS file is its strict software dependency. An Ableton .ALS file does not contain any actual audio data. Instead, it is essentially a compressed XML text document that stores file paths to external audio samples, automation curves, and plugin settings. If you share this file without the accompanying source audio, or if the recipient lacks the required third-party plugins, the project will break or remain silent. Similarly, Autodesk .ALS files require expensive, specialized licenses to view or edit.
To make these files usable outside of their native software, you must convert them. For web streaming or everyday listening, export Ableton projects to MP3 or WAV. For cross-platform editing in other DAWs, extract the data to MIDI. If dealing with 3D scenes, convert to OBJ or FBX for broader compatibility. Just drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software via convert.guru.

The ALS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ALS converter.
