About FDR files

The .FDR file extension typically represents a legacy Final Draft Screenplay Document, created by older versions of Final Draft (versions 5 through 7). Alternatively, it is frequently used as a Flight Data Recorder file to store raw telemetry and diagnostic logs generated by DJI Drones, SAP ERP systems, and commercial aviation recorders like L3Harris.

For screenwriters, the .FDR format is problematic because it is a closed, proprietary binary format. Modern industry standards require FDX or PDF files. Opening an old .FDR script often requires purchasing expensive, licensed software, as most standard word processors cannot interpret the specialized screenplay formatting. Similarly, .FDR drone logs are often obfuscated or compressed using GZIP, meaning users cannot simply open them in a spreadsheet to view their flight path. Standard online converters frequently fail because they lack the specific parsers for these proprietary binary and telemetry structures.

To restore usability to your files, screenplays should be converted to FDX for modern editing, or PDF and RTF for universal reading. For flight telemetry logs, parsing the file into CSV or TXT is necessary for analysis.

Because this file format relies heavily on proprietary structures, it is difficult to open or convert natively without the original software. If our analysis detects standard text layers, underlying scripts, or embedded GZIP archives, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your FDR file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted FDX, FRD, JPG, PDF, TXT, DOCX, FOUNTAIN, EDA and TXF files.

The FDR Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FDR converter.
