About FDR files
The .fdr extension is a classic example of a filename conflict where the file's content depends entirely on its origin. Most commonly, it represents a legacy screenplay document created by older versions (5, 6, or 7) of Final Draft, the industry-standard software for screenwriting. These files are proprietary binary containers, meaning you cannot simply open them in Microsoft Word or a standard text editor to view the script. This can be a hassle for writers or producers trying to access archived scripts without an active Final Draft subscription. The modern standard is the XML-based FDX, leaving .FDR files as difficult-to-access relics that often require conversion to PDF for sharing or RTF/DOCX for editing.
Alternatively, in technical and industrial contexts, an .fdr file often serves as a Flight Data Recorder log (used by aviation black boxes or DJI drones) or a data repository for legacy Siebel CRM systems. These are raw data dumps containing telemetry or financial records. They are typically unreadable to humans and useless without the specific proprietary software that generated them. For these users, the goal is usually extracting the raw data into a structured format like CSV, XLSX, or KML (for mapping drone paths) to perform analysis in standard tools like Excel.
Convert.Guru analyzes your FDR file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert FDR file to PDF, FDX, TXT, RTF, DOC, DOCX, ODT, PAGES, TEX, LATEX, MD or MARKDOWN, you can use Final Draft or similar software from the "Screenplay Document Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert PDF, DOC, ASC, TODO, NFO, MEMO, README, DOCX, JPG, TXT, NOTE or RTF files to FDR, try Final Draft or another comparable tool in the "Screenplay Document Storage" category.
The FDR Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FDR converter.
