The .FBW extension refers to two distinct but proprietary backup formats that often leave users stranded with inaccessible data. The most common use is a compressed backup archive generated by The Bat!, a secure email client by Ritlabs. These files contain a snapshot of your email folders, address books, and configuration settings. The biggest obstacle here is the lack of interoperability; you cannot simply import an .FBW file into Microsoft Outlook or Mozilla Thunderbird. To migrate your email history, you must typically convert the internal data into standard formats like MBOX (for Thunderbird/Apple Mail) or PST (for Outlook). Alternatively, for legal or personal archiving, converting specific emails to PDF ensures they can be read without installing any email client at all.
The second common variation is a legacy HP Recovery Manager backup file. These archives were created by older Hewlett-Packard utilities to back up user data before a system reset. The major problem users face today is that the original HP software is often incompatible with modern operating systems like Windows 10 or 11, effectively locking you out of your own photos and documents. In this scenario, the goal is not to "restore" the system but to extract the contents. Converting the container to a generic ZIP or extracting the files directly is the only way to retrieve your data without hunting down obsolete drivers.
