About CVA files

A .CVA file primarily functions as either an HP SoftPaq Information File or an IDIS Surveillance Video file.

The most common variant is the HP SoftPaq format, utilized by Hewlett-Packard (HP) deployment tools like HP Image Assistant and HP System Software Manager. These files contain UTF-8 encoded metadata about software and driver updates, including version numbers, hardware dependencies, and silent installation command-line parameters. The main disadvantage is that the proprietary extension confuses users, even though the file is fundamentally just plain text. IT professionals often need to open these files to audit update parameters or troubleshoot failed driver deployments. Because they are text-based, they are best converted to standard TXT files.

The second variant is a surveillance video container generated by IDIS CCTV systems. These .CVA files typically wrap standard MP4 encoded video streams inside a proprietary container designed to prevent evidence tampering. The primary disadvantage of this format is extremely poor playback compatibility. You cannot play this footage in standard web browsers or generic media players without installing specialized IDIS playback software. This causes immense frustration when sharing critical security footage with law enforcement or insurance agencies. Converting this .CVA video to a standard MP4 or AVI format is highly recommended to ensure universal playback.

This file format is difficult to open or convert because standard converters fail to parse the proprietary IDIS video wrapper or recognize the HP text structure. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. convert.guru can inspect the internal file structure, show you the embedded HP setup text, or identify underlying video streams to see if extraction is supported.

Convert.Guru analyzes your CVA file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted XML, VFS, FBW and SWI files.
