About EXT files

The .EXT file extension is highly ambiguous and typically serves three distinct purposes: a Fantasy Grounds virtual tabletop add-on, a stripped email attachment, or a file encrypted by ransomware.

When used by Fantasy Grounds, an .EXT file is internally just a standard ZIP archive containing XML interface definitions and LUA scripts. The primary disadvantage of this format is opacity - you cannot natively view or edit the underlying code or graphical assets without extracting the archive first.

In corporate environments, secure email gateways (such as Microsoft Exchange) frequently strip unfamiliar or potentially harmful extensions from attachments, renaming them to a generic .EXT. These files are essentially broken and unusable until you identify their original MIME type. Furthermore, if your file is named with a pattern like document.id-[string].ext, it has been locked by Dharma or Crysis ransomware. Note that conversion tools cannot fix encrypted files; they require specialized decryption keys from cybersecurity professionals.

For Fantasy Grounds modification, convert or rename your .EXT to ZIP to access the source files. For generic email attachments, you must analyze the file's binary header to determine if it should be restored and converted to a PDF for reading, or a DOCX for editing.

Convert.Guru analyzes your EXT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted TXT, JPG, EML, EX4, EXE, JPEG, CLG, LOG and DL_ files.
