About EXT files
The .EXT file extension presents a unique challenge because it is used for three completely different purposes, creating confusion for users trying to open them.
Most commonly, it serves as an add-on file for Fantasy Grounds, a virtual tabletop platform. In this context, the file is simply a renamed ZIP archive containing XML data, LUA scripts, and image assets. Users often need to convert these to standard ZIP files to unpack the contents, edit game rules, or debug custom scripts, as standard archivers like 7-Zip may not recognize the extension automatically.
Secondly, .EXT is frequently generated by email servers (e.g., noname.ext) when an attachment's metadata is lost during transmission. In these cases, the file is often a perfectly valid PDF, DOCX, or JPG that has been stripped of its true identity. The operating system cannot open it because it lacks the correct association. Users need to analyze the file header and convert it back to its original format to view the document or image.
Lastly, be aware that ransomware strains like Crysis/Dharma may append .EXT to encrypted files. If your file is a legitimate game asset or recovered attachment, convert it to ZIP for editing or PDF for viewing.
Convert.Guru analyzes your EXT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert EXT file to DLL, SO, DYLIB, BUNDLE, PLUGIN, XPI, CRX, SAFARIEXTZ, APPEX, KEXT, SYS or DRV, you can use Fantasy Grounds or similar software from the "Virtual Tabletop Extension" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert LV2, DYLIB, VST, AAX, DRV, TDE, LADSPA, BUNDLE, AU, DLL, RTAS or SO files to EXT, try Fantasy Grounds or another comparable tool in the "Virtual Tabletop Extension" category.
The EXT Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our EXT converter.
