About DL_ files
A .DL_ file is a compressed Dynamic Link Library (DLL) primarily found on Microsoft Windows installation media and legacy software setup discs. Microsoft uses this format, marked by the trailing underscore, to save disk space during distribution; for example, a file named kernel32.dl_ contains the essential kernel32.dll inside.
The primary problem for users is that .DL_ files are not directly executable or usable by the operating system in their compressed state. Simply renaming the file from .DL_ to DLL will almost always fail because the file header remains compressed (often using MS-ZIP or Quantum compression algorithms), rendering it unreadable to the Windows loader. Users typically encounter these files when trying to manually restore a corrupt system file from an installation CD, only to find the file is locked inside this archive format.
To make the file usable, you must convert (expand) it back to a standard DLL. For manual restoration, the Microsoft Windows command-line utility expand.exe is the standard tool. Third-party archivers like 7-Zip and WinRAR can also treat .DL_ files as archives, allowing you to extract the target DLL for immediate installation or system repair.
Convert.Guru analyzes your DL_ file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted DLL, MP4, MDMP and INI files.
The DL_ Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DL_ converter.
