Unlike standard XML documents which are human-readable text, .exml files are often binary-encoded, compressed, or encrypted to optimize performance and secure proprietary data. For example, Egret Engine uses this format to define declarative UI layouts which are later compiled into JS (JavaScript) or JSON. Other variations include encrypted configuration files for Samsung Smart Switch backups or automotive diagnostic data for Jaguar Land Rover and Ford. This proprietary locking prevents users from opening the files in standard text editors like Notepad++ or web browsers.
