About EXML files
The .EXML file extension represents several distinctly different formats, primarily used as either a binary eXactML document, an Egret Engine UI skin, or an encrypted configuration file. Unlike standard XML files which are stored as plain, human-readable text, .EXML files are specifically designed to be either compressed for performance or encrypted for security. In the gaming world, engines like those from FromSoftware or custom modding communities for No Man's Sky use this format to store binary game data that loads faster than raw text. In industrial settings, companies like Ford Motor Company and Jaguar Land Rover use encrypted .EXML files to store highly sensitive vehicle module configurations, actively preventing third-party diagnostics from tampering with the car's computer. Similarly, the Samsung Smart Switch app uses this extension to securely encrypt user backup data like call logs and text messages.
Users typically want to convert .EXML files into standard XML, TXT, or JSON to inspect the data, edit game variables, or view backups. However, doing so is notoriously difficult. The primary disadvantage of this format is its locked, proprietary nature. If you open an encrypted vehicle configuration or a binary game file in a standard text editor, you will only see scrambled characters. Standard online converters fail entirely because they lack the specific decryption keys or proprietary decompression algorithms required to unpack the data.
Because of these severe restrictions, standard file conversion tools are useless. You usually need the exact software that created the file - such as a specific Altova tool, Egret Wing, or specialized modding scripts from GitHub. Our analyzer will inspect the file's hex signature to determine exactly which type of .EXML file you possess. If it detects unencrypted strings or a supported underlying structure, viewing or extracting the text may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your EXML file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert EXML file to BAK, BACKUP, OLD, TMP, TEMP, ARC, ZIP, TAR, GZ, 7Z, RAR or ISO, you can use Egret Wing or similar software from the "Binary or Encrypted XML Data" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

The EXML Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our EXML converter.
