About NOMEDIA files

The .nomedia file is primarily a directory marker used by the Android operating system. When placed inside a folder, it instructs the Android OS media scanner to ignore that directory, preventing any contained images, videos, or audio from showing up in your gallery or media player apps. This mechanism is standard practice for hiding app caches, voice notes, or raw system assets.

While traditional .nomedia files are completely empty (0 bytes), certain apps like Snapchat or WhatsApp exploit this extension to intentionally disguise downloaded media. In these edge cases, the file actually contains raw MP4 video data, JPG image data, or PNG overlays disguised under a false file extension.

The main disadvantage of the .nomedia format is that it intentionally breaks media playback. You cannot open these files natively on a desktop computer, and they remain invisible on mobile devices without a specialized file manager. If you are extracting cached files from a smartphone backup, dealing with disguised .nomedia files is highly frustrating because the operating system does not know which application to use to decode the hidden data.

If your file is larger than 0 bytes, it likely contains hidden media. For hidden videos, convert to MP4. For hidden images, convert to JPG or PNG for instant viewing. If the file is 0 bytes, no conversion is necessary; you can simply delete it from your Android device to unhide the folder's contents.

Convert.Guru analyzes your NOMEDIA file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
