The .d2i file extension usually represents a Diablo II Game Item file or a Diablo II Shared Stash file used by the popular PlugY mod. These files store isolated data for a specific sword, armor, or rune, or act as an external inventory bank. Gamers extract items from their main d2s save files into .d2i format to trade, backup, or manipulate using third-party inventory tools. A secondary use for the .d2i extension is as a localization and internationalization data file for the Dofus MMORPG.
The main disadvantage of .d2i files is their highly proprietary and closed nature. Diablo II items are stored as complex, bit-packed binary structures. You cannot simply open a .d2i file to see the stats of your item. Trying to open it in a basic text editor will show unreadable symbols and permanently corrupt the item if saved. Furthermore, because these files are heavily tied to specific game versions (like Diablo II Lord of Destruction vs. Diablo II: Resurrected), version mismatches frequently break the files.

The only reliable way to "convert" a Diablo II .d2i item is to use specialized software like Hero Editor to inject it back into a standard d2s character save. For Dofus data files, players often attempt to extract the translation strings to JSON or TXT for modding purposes.
