To convert other file formats to the "Application Configuration File" file type, you need software like Microsoft Train Simulator or a similar tool.
About ENG files
The .eng file extension is a highly fragmented format utilized by dozens of completely unrelated software applications. In its most common forms, it acts as a Microsoft Train Simulator engine parameter file (using UTF-16 encoding), a proprietary CAD/CAM engraving design for JDPaint, or an engine sound file for the racing simulator Live for Speed. It is also widely used by older PC games and Windows utilities to store English localization text strings.
Because .eng lacks a standardized internal structure, it presents a significant file management headache. Double-clicking the file almost always results in a Windows "Open With" error. The formats are mutually incompatible: a JDPaint vector file is binary and cannot be read by text editors, whereas a Train Simulator file is purely text-based. Some developers even use the .eng extension to disguise standard ZIP archives, EXE executables, or PDF documents. This makes opening, sharing, and archiving these files incredibly difficult without the exact original software that generated them. If it is a localization text or configuration file, convert it to TXT or CSV for easy editing. If it is recognized as a JDPaint CAD file, converting it to DXF or SVG will restore compatibility with modern vector software like AutoCAD. For long-term archiving of text-based or document variants, converting to PDF is the most reliable choice.
Convert.Guru analyzes your ENG file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert ENG file to HIN, EXE, ISO, BIN, CUE, PAK, WAD, PK3, PK4, BSP, MAP or SAV, you can use Microsoft Train Simulator or similar software from the "Multiple Software Application Data" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MOD, BIN, CFG, SCX, DAT, MPQ, LOG, CUE, INI, EXE, SCM or ISO files to ENG, try Microsoft Train Simulator or another comparable tool in the "Multiple Software Application Data" category.
The ENG Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ENG converter.
