About EMN files

The .EMN file is an Intermediate Data Format (IDF) board file used to exchange Printed Circuit Board (PCB) layout data between Electrical (ECAD) and Mechanical (MCAD) design software. It acts as the physical bridge between engineering departments, containing 2D board outlines, drilled hole locations, and component placement coordinates.

Historically developed to allow layout tools like PADS Layout or Altium Designer to communicate with 3D mechanical software like SolidWorks, the format presents significant real-world challenges. .EMN files are strictly structural mapping files and do not contain complex 3D rendering shapes or electrical schematics. Furthermore, an .EMN file is essentially useless on its own; it requires an accompanying EMP (profile) file to provide the Z-axis (height) and basic geometric data for the placed components. Opening and manipulating these files natively requires a costly, specialized CAD software subscription, and the format itself is slowly being phased out in favor of the newer IDX standard.

Engineers typically need to convert .EMN files into standardized 3D formats like STEP or IGES to model full product enclosures, or to PDF for basic documentation and manufacturing review. Standard online converters frequently fail because parsing the specific IDF syntax (usually IDF v2.0 or v3.0) and merging it with the EMP library demands specialized ECAD translation engines. Because it is a highly specific CAD exchange format, only native CAD software can perfectly render the full 3D assembly, but our analysis can detect the embedded coordinate content, reveal the IDF version, and assist with routing it to the right conversion workflow.

Convert.Guru analyzes your EMN file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted EMP, IDF, PR1, PHO and VLM files.

The EMN Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our EMN converter.
