The .vlm file extension is primarily used for Ashlar-Vellum CAD Drawing files created by Ashlar-Vellum drafting software. These files store 2D and 3D vector geometries, layouts, and product designs. A secondary, but significant, use is for Videojet SmartGraph Laser Marking Job files, which contain instructions for industrial laser marking machines. Other minor uses include VLC media player batch scripts and medical volume datasets.
The main disadvantage of the .vlm format is its highly proprietary nature. Files generated by Ashlar-Vellum or Videojet are locked into their respective software ecosystems. If you do not have a paid license for these specialized tools, you cannot easily open or review the files. They are not supported by standard web browsers or generic image viewers. Furthermore, industrial laser marking files contain machine-specific calibration data that is practically useless outside the factory floor.
