About VLM files
The .VLM file extension primarily represents CAD drawings and plot files created by Ashlar-Vellum software, such as Graphite (formerly Vellum). These files store precision 2D and 3D wireframe designs used in engineering and industrial drafting. While powerful for specific design workflows, .VLM files create significant interoperability challenges. They are a proprietary format that generally cannot be opened by industry-standard tools like AutoCAD or web browsers without conversion. This lock-in forces collaborators to purchase specific licenses just to view a drawing.
To overcome these barriers, users often need to convert .VLM files to more accessible formats. For collaboration and archiving, converting to PDF ensures the design is viewable on any device without specialized software. For editing in other CAD environments, converting to DXF or DWG is essential to preserve vector geometry.
Additionally, approximately 22% of .VLM files are industrial laser marking job files generated by Videojet SmartGraph software. These contain vector paths and settings for laser etching on production lines. These files are strictly tied to manufacturing hardware; converting them to SVG or PDF allows production managers to review job templates without accessing the shop floor control systems.
Convert.Guru analyzes your VLM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted VML, PNG, MP4, PDF, LBK, CF2 and EMN files.
The VLM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VLM converter.
