About WLD files
The .WLD extension primarily refers to two distinct but widely used formats: the Terraria World File and the GIS World File.
1. Terraria World File (Game Save)
For gamers, a .WLD file is the binary save container for Terraria, a popular sandbox adventure game by Re-Logic. It stores tile data, terrain generation, chest contents, and NPC locations.
The Challenge: These files are proprietary binary blobs. You cannot open them in a text editor, and they are prone to corruption if the game crashes. Users often struggle to view their entire map without exploring it manually in-game, or they need to transfer worlds between PC and mobile versions which can have compatibility friction.
The Solution:
- For Visualization: Convert the .WLD file to a high-resolution PNG or JPG image using map viewers like TEdit or Terrafirma. This allows you to see the entire generated world at once.
- For Editing: Tools like TEdit can parse .WLD files to let you modify terrain or inventory externally, effectively acting as a converter between the raw binary data and a visual editor.
2. GIS World File (Georeferencing)
In geospatial contexts, a .WLD file is a plain text sidecar file used by software like ArcGIS and QGIS. It contains six lines of parameters to georeference a raster image (like a JPG or BMP) to real-world coordinates.
The Challenge: The main drawback is that the coordinate data is detached from the image. If you move or rename the image without the .WLD file, the location data is lost. Additionally, standard image viewers ignore the .WLD file completely.
The Solution:
- For Archiving & Sharing: The best practice is to convert the source image and its .WLD sidecar into a single GeoTIFF (.TIF). This embeds the coordinate system directly into the image header, preventing data loss.
- For Web Mapping: Convert the data to KML or KMZ for use in Google Earth.
Convert.Guru analyzes your WLD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted WLD1, BAK, ZIP, PLR, TWLD, BAK2 and MYR files.
The WLD Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our WLD converter.
