About EDM files
The .EDM file extension primarily identifies the External Data Model format, the standard proprietary 3D asset container used by DCS World (Digital Combat Simulator). These binary files store complex aircraft geometry, collision shells, animations, and material definitions optimized for the Eagle Dynamics game engine.
Why convert .EDM files? Because .EDM files are compiled game assets, they are locked boxes to most users. They cannot be opened in standard 3D software like Blender, Autodesk 3ds Max, or Maya without specialized community-created plugins. Users frequently need to convert these files to access the underlying mesh for creating mods, 3D printing game assets, or studying vehicle topology. A secondary, less common use of this extension is for Adobe Extension Data Markup files - simple text-based XML settings used by legacy versions of Adobe Dreamweaver.
Best Conversion Targets:
For 3D Editing: Convert to OBJ or FBX. These formats preserve the mesh structure and are universally accepted by 3D modeling tools.
For 3D Printing: Convert to STL to strip away textures/animations and focus purely on the printable geometry.
For Adobe Files: Convert to XML or TXT to view and edit the configuration data in any text editor.
For Diagrams: If your file is from A5:SQL Mk-2, convert the diagram to PDF or PNG for easy sharing.
Convert.Guru analyzes your EDM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert EDM file to OBJ, PDF, HTML, TXT, RTF, DOC, DOCX, ODT, PAGES, TEX, LATEX or MD, you can use DCS World or similar software from the "3D Game Model" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert PDF, DOC, ASC, TODO, NFO, MEMO, README, DOCX, JPG, TXT, NOTE or RTF files to EDM, try DCS World or another comparable tool in the "3D Game Model" category.
The EDM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our EDM converter.
