A .edml file typically contains encrypted e-learning content utilized by the South Korean educational platform Megastudy. Another frequent use is for educational math documents distributed by publishers like MMath. A much smaller percentage of these files are Adobe Extension Data Markup Language documents used by Adobe Dreamweaver to define custom software extension behaviors.
The main disadvantage of .edml files in the e-learning context is their heavily restricted, closed-ecosystem nature. These files are typically DRM-protected to prevent unauthorized copying. This means they require a specific proprietary viewer application and often an active subscription to open. They cannot be opened natively by web browsers or standard document readers.
