Convert ECS to another file type
To convert your ECS file to another format, you need e-Catcher or other Backup software.
Convert a file to ECS
To convert other file formats to the "Mobile Data Archive" file type, you need software like e-Catcher or a similar tool.
About ECS files
The .ECS file extension represents a collision of several distinct data formats, creating significant confusion for users. The most statistically common variant is a Task Automation Script used by the e-Catcher application for industrial remote access, containing commands to configure VPN connections or automate maintenance tasks. These are typically text-based but require specific proprietary parsers to execute.
However, a highly frequent source of user frustration comes from the legacy Sony Ericsson Phone Backup format. Users often discover these files (backup.ecs or contacts.ecs) on old hard drives and realize they are proprietary binary archives that modern smartphones cannot read. This "vendor lock-in" makes retrieving old contacts or SMS messages nearly impossible without the obsolete Sony Ericsson PC Suite. Another variation includes Esri ArcGIS raster classification schemas (often structured as JSON) or ECSS compressed engineering data.
Practical Constraints & Friction:
Proprietary Encryption: Many .ECS files (especially from Aladdin Knowledge Systems or Sony) are encrypted or compressed with non-standard algorithms, meaning simply renaming them to ZIP rarely works.
Legacy Software: The software required to open these files officially (e.g., old phone suites) often won't run on Windows 10 or 11.
Data Obfuscation: Even if opened as text, the content may be scrambled or hexadecimal, requiring specific decoding tools.
Conversion Recommendations:
For Mobile Backups: The goal is data extraction. Convert these files to VCF (vCard) for contacts or CSV for spreadsheets. This allows import into Microsoft Excel or Google Contacts.
For Scripts & Configs: Convert to TXT or PDF to archive the logic in a human-readable format without needing the original e-Catcher environment.
For GIS Data: Since some .ECS files are effectively JSON, changing the extension to JSON or converting to XML can make the schema usable in web applications.
Convert.Guru analyzes your ECS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert ECS file to ZIP, RAR, 7Z, TAR, GZ, BZ2, XZ, LZMA, CAB, ACE, ARJ or LHA, you can use e-Catcher or similar software from the "Industrial Automation Script" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert XXE, 7Z, Z, PAK, LHA, DEB, UUE, TAR, LZH, ZIP, PKG or RAR files to ECS, try e-Catcher or another comparable tool in the "Industrial Automation Script" category.
The ECS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ECS converter.
