About ECS files

The .ecs file extension is highly fragmented and associated with multiple, unrelated software systems. Most commonly, it acts as a raster classification schema file in Esri ArcGIS (formatted as JSON) or as a legacy phone backup file created by old Sony Ericsson mobile phones. Other uses include task automation scripts for e-Catcher, encrypted communication streams for Aladdin E-Safe, encrypted chat sessions for EnCase Forensic, and embroidery design files for Easy Cut Studio. This fragmentation is a major disadvantage. Because an .ecs file can be a plain text JSON schema, a compressed ZIP archive, or heavily encrypted forensic data, standard operating systems rarely know how to open it. Double-clicking an .ecs file usually results in an error. Encrypted versions are entirely locked to proprietary ecosystems, making them inaccessible to regular users. Legacy Sony Ericsson backups require obsolete PC software that no longer runs on modern Windows. Converting an .ecs file depends entirely on its internal structure. If it is an ArcGIS schema, you can convert it to JSON or TXT. If it is a Sony Ericsson backup, it might be a disguised ZIP file containing contacts and SMS messages. Our platform analyzes the file headers to determine its true origin. Because many .ecs formats are closed, encrypted, or proprietary, standard online converters often fail to process them. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your ECS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted ECS5, ECS6, EPS, PDF, ICS, PNG, ENC, ZIP, Z01 and Z04 files.

The ECS Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ECS converter.
