About ECG files
An .ecg file is a data format used to store electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) readings. These files capture the electrical activity of the heart over time and are generated by specialized medical equipment, such as the GE Healthcare MUSE system, Bittium FAROS sensors, Schiller AG Cardiovit, and Holter monitors following the ISHNE standard. In rare cases, the .ecg extension is also used by McAfee Endpoint Encryption as an encrypted file container.
The main disadvantage of the medical .ecg format is extreme vendor lock-in. Because there is no single universal standard for ECG files, a file generated by a Biocare machine often cannot be opened natively by Contec or Schiller software. These files require expensive, proprietary clinical software or custom viewer applications like PhysioNet WFDB. For researchers, patients, or clinicians outside of a specific hospital network, opening an .ecg file on a standard computer or web browser is impossible without specialized tools.
To view, analyze, or share these files, you must convert them into standard formats. For sharing patient records or printing waveforms, convert to PDF. For statistical data analysis or plotting in Python and R, convert the raw signal to CSV or XML. For interoperable clinical archiving, standard formats like EDF (European Data Format) or DICOM are preferred. The ECG Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ECG converter.
