Unlike a standard JPG or PNG, a .DICOM file is a container that wraps the image pixel data - often from CT scans, MRIs, or X-rays - together with critical patient metadata (ID, name, acquisition parameters) in a single distinct object. While essential for diagnostic accuracy in clinical settings using PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication Systems), this format is notoriously difficult to manage outside of a hospital network.
For researchers, patients, or developers, .DICOM files present significant friction. They often contain high-bit-depth data (12-bit or 16-bit grayscale) that standard photo viewers cannot render correctly, resulting in black or washed-out images. Furthermore, strict file headers and the inclusion of Protected Health Information (PHI) make sharing these files risky and compliant software like RadiAnt DICOM Viewer or OsiriX heavy to install. To overcome these compatibility quirks and privacy risks, users frequently need to convert these files. For presentations, web use, or quick referencing, converting to JPG or PNG is ideal, though it 'burns in' the visual contrast settings. For archiving reports, PDF is the standard target.
