About DICOM files

DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) is a standard for storing and transmitting medical images. DICOM files are used for storing and transferring medical images, such as X-rays, CT scans, and MRI scans. DICOM files have the file extension .dcm, .dic, or .dicom.

Converting DICOM files can be a challenge, as the files are often large and contain a lot of data. Additionally, the files are often in a proprietary format, which can make conversion difficult. There are a few different software programs that can be used to convert DICOM files, such as GDCM, ITK, and DICOM Library. These programs can be used to convert DICOM files to other formats, such as JPEG, PNG, TIFF, and BMP.

Using DICOM files can have some drawbacks, such as the difficulty in converting them and the large file size. Additionally, DICOM files often contain a lot of metadata, which can be difficult to manage. For these reasons, it is often easier to use a free and easy online website, such as Convert.Guru, to convert DICOM files.

The DICOM Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began more than 25 years ago in California, when Tom Simondi published the most comprehensive database of file formats on his website. Before that, Tom had worked on Space Shuttle development at the Air Force Systems Command’s Space Division in Los Angeles. He is known as one of the top programmers of the late 1980s.

When Microsoft integrated Tom’s Filext database into Windows XP, it became the leading platform for analyzing and processing file types and formats.

Today, we use the latest technologies to analyze, process, and convert one of the world's largest collections of file formats. We are committed to developing the best DICOM converter by continuously improving quality, usability, and reliability.
