About DXL files

The .DXL extension represents two distinct but technical file types rooted in the IBM ecosystem. The most common format (55%) is the Domino XML Language file, an XML-based representation of data and design elements exported from IBM Notes (formerly Lotus Notes). While the standard NSF database format is a proprietary binary black box, DXL acts as a bridge, allowing developers to export emails, documents, and schema designs into a human-readable text format for version control or migration. However, raw DXL files are often bloated with Domino-specific tags and require the specific domino.dtd to be parsed correctly by standard tools, making them difficult to view without extensive cleanup.

The second type (6%) is the DOORS eXtension Language script used by IBM Engineering Requirements Management DOORS. This C-like scripting language automates traceability and reporting tasks within the DOORS environment. Users often need to convert these scripts to TXT for editing in standard IDEs or PDF to archive legacy code documentation.

Convert.Guru analyzes your DXL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted DXF, JPG, PNG, ZIP, NTS, NCF, ID and PDF files.

The DXL Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DXL converter.
