Extract text from Domino XML files (DXL)

A .DXL file is primarily a Domino XML Language file used by HCL Notes (formerly IBM Lotus Notes) to export database structures, design elements, emails, and documents into an XML-based format. Alternatively, it can function as a DOORS eXtension Language script, which is a C-like programming language used to automate tasks within IBM Rational DOORS.
The main disadvantage of the .DXL format is its rigid, proprietary XML schema. While it is technically plain text, the formatting is incredibly verbose, often resulting in bloated files exceeding hundreds of megabytes. This makes them difficult to read for non-technical users and prone to crashing basic text editors like Notepad. Users typically need to convert .DXL to CSV to analyze data in Microsoft Excel, or to clean XML and TXT to extract specific email text or database records. Note that converting to a flat format like CSV will inherently lose the hierarchical database structure of the original Lotus Notes file.
Because the Domino XML schema is complex and deeply nested, standard online converters almost always fail to process it properly. Often, only the original IBM or HCL software can perfectly read or import the data back into an NSF database.
