The .NTS file extension represents multiple distinct, highly specific formats. Its most common uses include Numerical Taxonomy System (NTSYS-pc) data files, legacy WordPerfect Note documents, and video recording indexes or navigation files created by Personal Video Recorders (PVRs) using ALi Corporation chipsets or Humax hardware. It is also used as a project file in NTS Network Simulator, an IBM Lotus Notes Traveler Server configuration file, and even as a plain-text JSON save file for the indie game Oxenfree.
Because .NTS files are highly proprietary, they present major usability challenges. A PVR-generated .NTS file is often locked to the specific hardware chipset that recorded it, making it extremely difficult to play on a standard computer without specialized software like NextPVR. Legacy WordPerfect notes require outdated software to render natively, and taxonomy data files are unreadable outside of specialized scientific environments. Users usually need to convert these files to standard formats like TXT, CSV, or PDF for data, and standard video containers like MP4 or TS for viewing and sharing.
