About NSF files
The .NSF extension serves two distinct, incompatible purposes: the Notes Storage Facility database and the Nintendo Sound Format.
The primary use (approx. 73%) is by HCL Notes (formerly IBM Lotus Notes) and Domino servers. These are complex container files storing emails, calendars, contacts, and collaborative applications. The major problem for users is the strict proprietary lock-in; you generally cannot open an .NSF file without the specific Notes client installed and a valid user.id file for encryption authentication. They are notorious for becoming inaccessible "zombie" data archives once an enterprise migrates away from the Lotus ecosystem. To regain access or migrate data, the standard workflow is converting email stores to PST for Microsoft Outlook, archiving legal documents to PDF/A, or extracting raw contact lists to CSV.
The secondary use is the Nintendo Sound Format, which contains audio data ripped directly from Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) ROMs. Unlike standard audio files, these contain the actual machine code instructions for the NES sound hardware (RP2A03), meaning they require specialized emulation plugins to play. Enthusiasts convert these to MP3 or FLAC for playback on standard devices.
Convert.Guru analyzes your NSF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted NSFE, NFS, VGM, RAR, NDL, SQLITE, ADB, PST, PDF, CSV, MSG, MBOX and MIDI files.
The NSF Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our NSF converter.
