About DWFX files
A .DWFX file is a secure, compressed CAD data file created by Autodesk software such as AutoCAD or Revit. It represents the modern evolution of the DWF format, utilizing the Microsoft XML Paper Specification (XPS) to wrap design data in a ZIP-compressed container. This format serves as 'digital paper,' allowing engineers to share rich 2D and 3D design reviews, markups, and object properties without releasing the editable source DWG files.
While .DWFX files are superior to their predecessors due to native Windows compatibility (via the XPS Viewer), they still present significant compatibility hurdles. They are fundamentally proprietary publishing formats, meaning they are often inaccessible on macOS, Linux, or mobile devices without specialized software like Autodesk Design Review. Furthermore, because they are intended for 'review' rather than 'creation,' editing the geometry is intentionally restricted. To ensure universal accessibility for clients and stakeholders, the best practice is to convert .DWFX to PDF for documentation, WebP or JPG for web embedding, or back to DWG if vector recovery is attempted.
Convert.Guru analyzes your DWFX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert DWFX file to PDF, DWG, DXF, STEP, DWF, NWD, IFC, STL, OBJ, DGN, RVT or RFA, you can use Autodesk Design Review or similar software from the "CAD Design Review" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert SLDASM, DGN, PRT, IAM, X_B, CATPRODUCT, SLDPRT, RVT, ASM, DWG, CATPART or DXF files to DWFX, try Autodesk Design Review or another comparable tool in the "CAD Design Review" category.
The DWFX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DWFX converter.
