About DSR files
The .DSR file extension represents multiple distinct, highly specialized formats. Its most prominent use is as a Visual Basic report designer file for ActiveReports, storing layout, scripting, and structural data for software reporting. It is also actively used as an Electrical installation project dossier (based on XML) by Swiss software like SAD ElektroForm, as a DICOM Structured Report for medical imaging, and as a Tajima embroidery machine design file.
These files are notoriously frustrating to manage because the extension is completely fragmented. A .DSR file created for a Swiss electrical dossier will immediately crash a DICOM medical viewer. Furthermore, these are mostly proprietary formats that lock your data inside specialized software requiring expensive, niche licenses. Standard web browsers and built-in operating system tools cannot recognize or read them.
Users typically need to convert .DSR files to universally accessible formats like PDF, XML, or TXT. Converting an ActiveReports design or a DICOM structured report to PDF preserves the layout and data for easy sharing with clients or medical staff. If the file is an embroidery design, converting it to a standard machine format like DST is required for actual production.
Because these are proprietary or highly structured binary formats, they are incredibly difficult to convert. Often, only the original software - such as Microsoft Visual Studio or Tajima DGML - can accurately read or export the visual data. Standard online converters fail because they cannot guess the underlying industry of the file. If our analysis detects a supported underlying embedded format like XML, viewing or conversion may still be seamlessly possible.

The DSR Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DSR converter.
