About DSM files
A .DSM file typically represents one of three distinct formats. Most commonly, it is an RTS Security Design Tool project file, which stores security system layouts internally as JSON data. Alternatively, it serves as a DeSmuME emulator movie file used by the DeSmuME Nintendo DS emulator, or as a Digital Sound Muxed media file played by Media Player Classic. Occasionally, developers encounter them as Borland CodeGuard Symbol Map files or vintage Digital Sound Module audio trackers. Users usually want to convert DeSmuME movie files to standard video formats like MP4 or MKV to share gameplay. However, an emulator movie is not actual video data; it is merely a recording of controller inputs and frame timings. Because of this, standard online video converters fail to process it. You must use the DeSmuME software itself to play back the recording and export it to an AVI video file. For RTS project files, the reliance on specific, expensive, proprietary design tools locks your layout data inside a closed ecosystem. These multiple, unrelated uses make the .DSM format highly fragmented and difficult to open without the precise original software. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. Our platform will analyze the binary signature to determine if your .DSM file is an emulator recording, a media container, or raw JSON text, allowing you to extract usable data even when standard tools fail.

The DSM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DSM converter.
