About DSM files

The .DSM extension is a source of frequent confusion because it is shared by three completely different file types, each requiring a specific conversion workflow.

1. DeSmuME Movie Recording (Most Common for Gamers)

If you downloaded a .DSM file expecting a video of Nintendo DS gameplay, you likely cannot play it. These are Input Recordings, not video files. They contain a text-based log of every button press and stylus movement (frame-by-frame) used to "replay" a game inside the DeSmuME emulator. Because they do not contain pixel data, they are tiny (KB size) but cannot be converted directly to MP4 or AVI by standard video converters.

Best Target: To convert this to a viewable video, you must open the file in DeSmuME, play it back, and use the emulator's File > Export AVI feature.

2. Digital Sound Module (Audio Tracker)

Musicians and retro-audio enthusiasts encounter .DSM as a tracker module format (similar to MOD or S3M). These files contain synthesized instrument samples and pattern data. While efficiently small, they are not supported by most modern media players.

Best Target: Convert to MP3 or WAV for universal playback using tools like OpenMPT or VLC Media Player.

3. RTS Security Design Project

In professional security contexts, .DSM files act as JSON-formatted project files for the RTS Security Design Tool. These contain layout coordinates, camera zones, and device specs.

Best Target: Since these are text-based JSON files, you can convert them to PDF for sharing layouts or open them in any text editor (like Notepad++) to inspect the raw data.
