About RTS files

The .RTS file extension is predominantly used for Runtime Settings within the CODESYS Development System, a leading software platform for industrial automation technology. These files store system component configurations required to execute programmable logic controller (PLC) code. Secondary uses include econometric analysis scripts for Estima RATS (Regression Analysis of Time Series), remote connection profiles for Royal TS, and legacy streaming media for Apple QuickTime and RealPlayer. To properly open an industrial .RTS file, users require the exact environment provided by the CODESYS Development System. Econometric scripts require the Estima RATS software. The major disadvantage of the .RTS format is its highly specialized and fragmented nature. The extension is used by completely unrelated industries. Opening an industrial controller configuration file without the exact hardware profile or software version results in unreadable data blocks. Additionally, media .RTS files suffer from being obsolete streaming formats that modern web browsers outright reject. If the file contains plain text script data (such as RATS scripts), converting .RTS to TXT, CSV, or XML is highly recommended to preserve the data in a universally accessible format. Converting proprietary binary data, however, will result in complete data corruption. For legacy video formats, converting to MP4 is necessary but requires specialized media decoders. This file format is exceptionally difficult to convert because the data structures are deeply tied to the original host applications. Standard online converters fail because they lack the specific industrial automation libraries or legacy video codecs required to parse the data. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. Fortunately, you can drag and drop your file onto convert.guru to see what it is and convert it if supported. We will identify the file format, inspect the raw file structure, and show you the internal text. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

The RTS Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our RTS converter.
