About RTS files
The .rts extension is a classic example of a "filename collision," where multiple unrelated software ecosystems use the same tag. Most frequently (approx. 38%), you are dealing with a Runtime System component file generated by CODESYS, the leading IEC 61131-3 automation software for engineering control systems. These files define critical runtime behaviors for Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and are typically strictly formatted text or binary blobs. The second most likely candidate (8%) is a data file from Estima RATS (Regression Analysis of Time Series), containing econometric data or scripts for statistical modeling.
The primary friction users face is the proprietary nature of these environments. A .rts file from a PLC environment is meaningless to an economist using RATS, and neither file type can be opened natively by Windows or macOS. Furthermore, legacy multimedia files from the late 90s (RealPlayer/QuickTime) also utilized .rts for streaming logic, which modern media players now reject entirely. This forces users to guess the origin before they can even attempt to open it.
Recommended Conversion Targets:
- For Data Analysis (RATS): Convert to CSV or XLSX. This liberates the statistical data from the proprietary RATS environment, allowing for analysis in Excel, Python, or Tableau.
- For Automation (CODESYS): Convert to TXT or XML. This allows engineers to audit runtime settings and configurations in a standard text editor like Notepad++ without requiring the full CODESYS IDE.
- For Legacy Media: Convert old Real/QuickTime streams to MP4 or MP3 to restore accessibility on modern devices.
- For IT Admin (Royal TS): Convert connection lists to JSON for easier parsing and backup.

The RTS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our RTS converter.
