The .det file extension is a highly fragmented format used by multiple unrelated software systems to store 'detail' records. Common uses include contact history and email messages in legacy ACT! CRM and Eudora clients, structural steel detailing in SDS/2, and localized government reporting such as Italian Ministry of Labour receipts and Peruvian SUNAT PDT tax declarations.
The main disadvantage of the .det format is its lack of standardization. Because 'DET' simply stands for 'Detail', developers have used it for plain text, proprietary binaries, and renamed standard formats. For example, Italian employment receipts are actually standard PDF files, and SUNAT telematic declarations are internally standard ZIP archives. If you double-click a .det file, your operating system will not know which program to use, and blindly opening it in a text editor may result in corrupted, unreadable binary text.
To make these files usable, you must convert or rename them based on their underlying structure. Italian labor receipts should be converted to PDF for standard viewing and printing. SUNAT files should be converted to ZIP for extraction. CRM email histories are best converted to TXT or CSV for readable archiving.
