To convert other file formats to the "Email Cache File" file type, you need software like Netscape Mail or a similar tool.
Most .SNM files function as Mail Summary Index files generated by legacy email clients like Netscape Mail or Eudora. They act as a lightweight cache, storing structural information, folder hierarchies, and email headers to speed up the loading process of large mailboxes. Another common variant is the highly proprietary Samsung S Note document, used by Samsung mobile devices to store digital handwritten notes and sketches.
The main disadvantage of the email cache variant is that it is structurally useless on its own. An .SNM file does not contain the actual email message bodies; it simply points to an accompanying mailbox file (usually MBX). For the Samsung S Note variant, the file format is closed and strictly tied to the Samsung ecosystem, making it frustratingly difficult to open on non-Samsung devices without logging into a specific app ecosystem.
Converting a Netscape .SNM file directly to a PDF or DOCX document is effectively impossible because the text content is simply not there. Users must locate the corresponding mailbox file and convert that larger file into standard formats like MBOX or PST. For Samsung S Note files, exporting directly from the native app to PDF or JPG is the most reliable workaround, as third-party tools struggle with the format's proprietary encoding.
