About DEM files
The .dem file extension generally represents a Video Game Demo File created by Valve's Source Engine or Source 2. Popular games like Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO), Half-Life, Garry's Mod, and Rust use these files to save match replays. In a completely different context, .dem stands for Digital Elevation Model, a specialized geographic data format used by the USGS to store 3D surface topography.
The biggest disadvantage of a game .dem file is that it is not actually a video format. It only stores network packets, player coordinates, and game events. Because of this, you cannot open a .dem file in a standard media player like VLC or Windows Media Player. Furthermore, game replays are heavily tied to specific game updates. An older .dem file will often fail to load or crash if the game engine has been updated since the match was recorded. GIS .dem files share similar user frustrations; they are massive raw data arrays that require specialized, resource-heavy software to simply visualize a map.
To share a game replay on YouTube or social media, you must convert the .dem to a standard video format like MP4 or MKV. However, traditional online video converters always fail to process these files because they lack the necessary 3D game engine to render the graphics. For GIS files, converting to .GeoTIFF or XYZ is highly recommended to improve compatibility with modern mapping software.
Since .dem files are deeply proprietary and complex, they are incredibly difficult to convert directly. Often, only the original game engine or specific GIS software like QGIS can properly read and export the data. Our tool inspects the binary headers to confirm if you are dealing with a Source Engine replay, a Rust demo, or a geographic map, pointing you to the exact solution you need.
Convert.Guru analyzes your DEM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert DEM file to MP4, DTM, TIFF, STL, TIN, DSM, EXE, ISO, BIN, CUE, PAK or WAD, you can use Counter-Strike or similar software from the "Video Game Replay Data" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MOD, BIN, CFG, SCX, DAT, MPQ, LOG, CUE, INI, EXE, SCM or ISO files to DEM, try Counter-Strike or another comparable tool in the "Video Game Replay Data" category.
The DEM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DEM converter.
