About DAX files

The .dax extension is a shared filename used by three distinct communities, creating significant confusion.

  1. TOPSIM Business Simulation: The most common use (statistically) is a decision data file generated by TOPSIM management simulations. These contain student or executive decision parameters for processing. They are strictly proprietary; you cannot open them in Excel or Notepad meaningfully. The only valid workflow is uploading them back to the TOPSIM cloud or server.
  2. Microsoft Power BI / Analysis Services: Technical users frequently encounter .dax files containing Data Analysis Expressions scripts. Used by tools like DAX Studio and Power BI Desktop, these are essentially UTF-8 or UTF-16 text files. The primary drawback is that Windows does not preview them natively. To document or share code without sending the full database, users convert these scripts to TXT, SQL, or PDF.
  3. PSP Compressed Disk Image: A legacy format for PlayStation Portable games, created by the developer Dark_AleX. It compresses ISO files to save space on Memory Sticks but is not widely supported by modern emulators compared to CSO or standard ISO. Gamers typically need to convert these back to ISO to ensure compatibility with emulators like PPSSPP.
