About PQX files

The .PQX file is a custom data connector package created for Microsoft Power BI and the broader Power Query ecosystem. Developers build these files to allow Power BI to connect to custom, proprietary, or unsupported external data sources. The file bundles together the connector logic written in the M formula language, alongside necessary assets like JSON configuration files and PNG icons. You can create and edit these files using Visual Studio Code with the Power Query SDK.

The main disadvantage of the .PQX format is its strict lock-in to the Microsoft data ecosystem. You cannot use a .PQX file in rival business intelligence tools like Tableau or Qlik. Furthermore, because it functions as an opaque plugin package rather than a standard data file, it is completely unreadable to standard text editors or web browsers unless you know how to unpack it. It requires users to deploy the file into specific local directories for Power BI to recognize it, which often frustrates users seeking quick access to the underlying connector logic.

The most practical conversion target for a .PQX file is a standard ZIP archive. Because the file is internally structured as a standard ZIP container, converting or renaming it allows you to extract the raw contents, including the M scripts and metadata, without losing any data.

This file format is difficult for traditional converters to process because it is a highly specialized developer package rather than a typical document or image. Most standard online converters fail to understand what to do with a Power Query connector. Our analysis engine can detect the embedded ZIP structure, allowing you to extract the internal files, view the code, and recover the assets.

Convert.Guru analyzes your PQX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted PBIX, DAX and PQT files.

The PQX Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PQX converter.
