About PQT files

The .PQT file extension serves two distinct, highly technical purposes. Most commonly, it acts as an Apache Parquet file, a highly compressed, columnar binary data storage format used by big data frameworks like Apache Hadoop and Apache Spark. Alternatively, it functions as a Microsoft Power Query Template, a packaged ZIP container used by Microsoft Excel and Power BI to store M language data transformation logic without the actual dataset.

Both versions of the .PQT format pose major challenges for everyday users. If your file is a Parquet dataset, it is essentially a binary black box designed for machines, not humans. You cannot simply open it in a standard text editor. It requires specialized programming environments like Python with the Pandas library to interpret the compressed columnar structure. Meanwhile, Power Query Templates are locked tightly into the Microsoft ecosystem. They require an active subscription or heavy desktop apps to open, and they are essentially useless without access to the original data source.

To make Parquet data readable and actionable, you must convert the .PQT file into universally supported row-based formats. Converting to CSV or XLSX makes the data instantly accessible to business analysts. For web development, converting to JSON is highly practical. Be aware that converting from a highly optimized columnar format to a standard text-based CSV will result in significantly larger file sizes, as you lose the advanced compression of Parquet.

Because .PQT files are either complex binary structures or proprietary Microsoft templates, standard online converters often fail to process them. Typically, only the original big data framework or Microsoft software can accurately decode the files. Our engine analyzes the file signature to determine if it is Parquet data or a ZIP-based template, and extracts readable content whenever supported.

Convert.Guru analyzes your PQT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted PBIX, PQX and DAX files.

The PQT Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PQT converter.
