A .tn file is a low-resolution thumbnail image generated automatically by image management software or operating systems to speed up gallery browsing. Historically associated with discontinued applications like Google Picasa or generated by mobile systems like Android, these files serve as cached previews of larger, high-resolution photos.
The primary difficulty for users is that .tn files are often discovered during data recovery or backup verification when the original high-quality images are missing. Because they are designed as system artifacts rather than user-facing files, most standard image viewers cannot open them directly, and they lack the pixel density required for printing or editing. While they may internally contain standard JPEG headers, the non-standard extension blocks easy access.
For recovery or viewing purposes, the best approach is converting these thumbnails to standard JPG or PNG formats. This allows you to salvage at least a visual record of the image, albeit at a reduced size (often 160x160 or similar dimensions).
