About CTR files
The .CTR file extension is highly ambiguous and used by multiple unrelated software applications. Its most common use is as a game save file for the strategy game Humankind by Amplitude Studios. Under the hood, these save files are standard ZIP archives containing XML game state data. Beyond gaming, .CTR is used as mod data archives for the C&C Generals Contra mod (using the BIGF format), construction project estimation files for G8 Estimating Software (formatted internally as SQL or SQLite), and mortgage serviceability data for Suncorp Bank (saved as plain-text JSON). Occasionally, it appears as cached JPG images in Microsoft Edge or system fonts for Nintendo 3DS and legacy CorelDRAW software. The main disadvantage of the .CTR format is this exact lack of standardization. Your operating system cannot determine which program to use to open it, often resulting in errors if you try to open an SQL database in an archive manager or a game save in a text editor. Furthermore, proprietary game saves and mod files are practically useless outside of their parent applications. Standard converters fail because they look at the extension instead of the internal data structure. For target formats, Humankind saves can be renamed to ZIP for extraction, and G8 project files are best converted to standard DB or CSV formats for data analysis. Because this format is incredibly fragmented, it is generally difficult to open or convert correctly. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data.
