About CPX files

The .cpx file extension serves several entirely distinct purposes across different software generations. Historically, it acts as a DOS Code Page Information file or font file used by Microsoft MS-DOS and early Windows to map character encodings. In modern enterprise environments, it is used by the Baloise CAPTEVIA application as a zipped insurance claim data package. Gamers frequently encounter it as a custom campaign file for Microsoft Age of Empires. Additionally, it appears as an XML layout template for Canon inkjet printers, a profile data file for TraCFoil CAD software, and a compressed Corel CMX graphic.

Because a .cpx file can contain anything from legacy binary font maps to standard ZIP archives containing insurance claims, users often struggle to open them. Trying to open a .cpx file by double-clicking it usually results in an error because modern operating systems cannot guess which underlying format is actually in use. Opening an MS-DOS code page requires legacy system emulation, which serves no modern administrative purpose. However, if your .cpx file is a CAPTEVIA claim or a Canon template, it uses standard underlying formats like ZIP or XML which are highly versatile.

Converting a .cpx file depends entirely on its origin. Standard online converters usually fail because they rely on the extension alone and cannot process the multiple proprietary structures bundled under the .cpx umbrella. For instance, an Age of Empires campaign cannot be converted to a document format. However, a Corel compressed graphic might be extracted to a standard CMX or converted to SVG or JPG.

This format overlap makes .cpx notoriously difficult to manage. Often, only the original software - whether it is a retro game engine or a proprietary insurance app - can properly read or export the data.

Convert.Guru analyzes your CPX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted CIPX, PCX, CXP, JPG, PNG, PDF, HSR, COK and KWI files.

The CPX Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CPX converter.
