About QMD files

The .QMD file extension primarily represents two distinct formats: a QGIS Layer Metadata File and a Quarto Markdown Document. In QGIS, an open-source geographic information system, .QMD files store XML or HTML-based metadata for spatial layers, providing crucial context about datasets. In data science workflows, .QMD files are plain text documents used by Quarto, an open-source publishing system backed by Posit. They combine markdown text with executable code blocks (R, Python, Julia) to generate dynamic reports. The main disadvantage of .QMD files is their software dependency. A QGIS .QMD is useless outside of the GIS environment, acting merely as a sidecar file. A Quarto .QMD requires a configured environment (like RStudio or Python interpreters) to render the embedded code, which can fail if libraries are missing or versions conflict. Sharing raw .QMD files with non-technical stakeholders or clients is highly impractical because they expose raw code and data logic rather than formatted results. To share data effectively, you must convert these files. For Quarto documents, convert to PDF for archiving and formal reports, HTML for web publishing, or DOCX for collaborative text editing. Note that converting a Quarto file requires executing the code, meaning interactive elements are lost in static formats like PDF. For QGIS metadata, converting the internal text to standard XML or TXT makes it readable in any text editor. Drop your file here to view and convert it securely right in your browser.

Convert.Guru analyzes your QMD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted RMARKDOWN, CPG, HTML, SHX, PRJ, DBF, PDF, ZIP, R, QML, SAV, APKG and SHP files.

The QMD Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our QMD converter.
