About CNM files
The .CNM file extension is primarily used for Queued Email Message files within the Mercury Mail Transport System (also known as Mercury/32). This mail server software uses .CNM files to temporarily hold email messages in a server spool directory before they are processed and dispatched. Alternatively, .CNM files function as outline documents created by NoteMap, a specialized outliner application originally developed by CaseSoft and later acquired by legal tech provider LexisNexis. These files store hierarchical text lists, research notes, and case details heavily utilized by legal professionals.
The main disadvantage of .CNM files is their highly specialized, proprietary nature. Mercury Mail spool files are not designed to be opened or read by standard desktop email clients like Microsoft Outlook or Mozilla Thunderbird. Similarly, NoteMap outlines require specific, legacy software to render the document's collapsible hierarchy properly. If you do not have an active LexisNexis license or access to the original legacy NoteMap installation, viewing your own outlines becomes practically impossible.
Users typically need to convert .CNM files to universally accessible formats to restore control over their data. For email files, converting to EML or TXT is best to preserve raw message headers and body text. For NoteMap outlines, migrating the data to DOCX, RTF, or PDF ensures the text and structure can be edited in modern word processors like Microsoft Word.
Because these are niche, undocumented formats, standard online converters consistently fail to process them. .CNM files generated by NoteMap often utilize proprietary binary encoding that traps your data. Just drag and drop your .CNM file into convert.guru to see what it is and convert it if supported. We will inspect the file structure, extract embedded text streams where possible, and allow you to view the underlying content even without the original software.
Convert.Guru analyzes your CNM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert CNM file to NM, TXT, RTF, DOC, DOCX, ODT, PAGES, TEX, LATEX, MD, MARKDOWN or LOG, you can use Mercury/32 or similar software from the "Queued Email and Outline Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

The CNM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CNM converter.
