About CNM files
The .CNM extension represents two distinct file types that often cause confusion due to their specialized nature.
1. Mercury Mail Message (Most Common)
Found on servers running Mercury/32 (associated with Pegasus Mail), these files reside in the \QUEUE directory. They contain the raw body of an email message waiting to be processed. The Problem: These are internal system files. If a mail queue gets stuck or corrupted, administrators are left with thousands of .CNM files that standard email clients cannot open directly. They often contain mixed binary headers and text, making them unreadable in Notepad. The Solution: For debugging, convert these to TXT to inspect the raw headers and body, or rename/convert to EML to attempt opening them in Outlook.
2. NoteMap Outline
A legacy format created by CaseSoft NoteMap (later acquired by LexisNexis). These files store structured outlines used primarily by legal professionals for litigation strategy. The Problem: NoteMap is specialized, older software. Modern word processors like DOCX-based Word cannot natively open .CNM files, leaving valuable case data locked in an obsolete format. The Solution: To preserve the hierarchy and content, convert these files to PDF for archiving or RTF / DOCX to migrate the outline structure into modern editing tools.
Convert.Guru analyzes your CNM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert CNM file to NM, TXT, RTF, DOC, DOCX, ODT, PAGES, TEX, LATEX, MD, MARKDOWN or LOG, you can use Mercury/32 or similar software from the "Queued Email Message" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert PDF, DOC, ASC, TODO, NFO, MEMO, README, DOCX, JPG, TXT, NOTE or RTF files to CNM, try Mercury/32 or another comparable tool in the "Queued Email Message" category.
The CNM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CNM converter.
