About SEC files

A .SEC file is primarily a proprietary video recording created by Samsung DVR (Digital Video Recorder) and NVR surveillance systems. It typically contains a raw H.264/AVC video stream packaged alongside security metadata, such as timestamps and anti-tamper watermarks. To view these files natively, users must rely on specific software like Samsung SmartViewer or the original DVR export utility. Occasionally, these files are exported onto a USB drive alongside a standalone .exe media player. The major disadvantage of the .SEC format is its restrictive, proprietary nature. These files cannot be opened by standard media players like VLC or Windows Media Player. Attempting to play them directly results in 'codec missing' or 'unsupported format' errors. Sharing these files with lawyers, police, or insurance adjusters is extremely annoying because it requires them to install unfamiliar software or run unknown executables, which is often blocked by corporate IT security policies. To make the footage usable, you must convert it. For web viewing or sharing, convert .SEC to MP4. For editing in Premiere Pro or Archiving, convert to AVI or MKV. Be aware that extracting the raw video stream might strip the proprietary on-screen timestamp or audio tracks if the conversion tool does not support decoding Samsung's specific metadata. Note: The .SEC extension is also occasionally used for Safe Exam Browser encrypted files or PGP Secret Keys, which are data files, not video.
