A .BWD file is most commonly a legacy text document created by Amar Bangla or BanglaWord, specific word processing software designed for typing in the Bengali language. These files act as containers for rich text but often rely on older, proprietary ANSI font encodings (such as 'SutonnyMJ') rather than modern Unicode standards.

Users frequently encounter .BWD files that are impossible to open on modern operating systems like Windows 10/11, macOS, or mobile devices because the original Amar Bangla software is discontinued or incompatible. Even if opened in a standard text editor, the Bengali script often appears as garbled 'gibberish' symbols due to the missing legacy fonts.
