About WBD files

A .WBD file acts as a proprietary container that can hold several completely unrelated formats, creating significant confusion for users. Most commonly, it functions as a Collaborative Virtual Whiteboard file generated by e-learning platforms like Blackboard Collaborate, Microsoft Whiteboard, or Webex. These files capture dynamic session data, including vector drawings, chat logs, and slide positions. Less commonly, the .WBD extension represents WizNote document archives (a ZIP-based format), Samsung DVR security camera video streams, or legacy Webshots Picture files.

Users typically encounter extreme friction when trying to archive these whiteboard sessions or share them with students and colleagues. The primary disadvantage of the .WBD format is severe proprietary lock-in. Because the data is locked inside an application-specific format, these files are completely unsupported by standard web browsers, built-in operating system tools, or image viewers. If you do not have an active, paid subscription or access to the original Learning Management System (LMS), the files behave like unreadable data.

To make the contents accessible, you must convert the file to standardized formats. Converting whiteboard sessions to PDF is the best approach for documentation and cross-platform sharing. Legacy Webshots images should be converted to JPG or PNG for easy viewing, while DVR video streams require conversion to MP4 for standard media playback. Be aware that converting a dynamic whiteboard file to a flat PDF will inherently result in the loss of interactive elements, such as the ability to edit strokes, scroll through chats, or playback the drawing sequence.

Because of this severe fragmentation, .WBD files are notoriously difficult to open or convert outside of their native environments. Often, only the original software can properly read, parse, or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your WBD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
