About PER files

A .per file is a highly fragmented format with multiple distinct real-world uses, making it confusing to handle. Most commonly, it stores gridded climatic time-series data for the Climatic Research Unit (CRU). However, it is also frequently used by X-Plane for aircraft performance data (which is zlib-compressed), by SAS JMP as a software license file, and by Age of Empires II to dictate AI computer player personality scripts. Because .per files lack a single universal standard, opening them is incredibly frustrating. You cannot simply double-click a .per file and expect your operating system to know what it is. A climatic data .per requires specialized scientific readers. An X-Plane performance file is locked in compression and useless outside the simulator. A Sony PlayStation error report is actually a zipped XML, but Windows will fail to recognize it without manually changing the extension. These rigid, proprietary data locks trap your information in silos. To make the data usable, extraction or conversion is strictly necessary. For data analysis, convert climatic or performance .per files to CSV or TXT. If you have a PlayStation error report, you can rename the extension to ZIP and extract the raw XML.

Convert.Guru analyzes your PER file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted PBC, DF and BPI files.

The PER Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PER converter.
