A .BSW file typically serves one of two completely different purposes. In the scientific community, it is a proprietary data file generated by Agilent (formerly Varian) Cary UV-Vis-NIR spectrophotometers. These files store highly specific spectroscopy scan results. In the construction and engineering sectors, a .BSW file is a 3D structural steel model created by legacy BIM software like StruCad (AceCad Software) or AVEVA Bocad-3D.
Opening these files is notoriously difficult because both formats are deeply proprietary. Scientific .BSW files require a costly license for Cary WinUV software. Meanwhile, StruCad is a legacy product, though some files can still be imported into modern platforms like Tekla Structures or viewed using the StruWalker tool.
Converting .BSW files poses significant challenges. Because standard converters cannot parse the closed, binary, or encrypted structures of these niche formats, they will fail to process them. Scientists usually need to convert these files to CSV or TXT to analyze the data in Excel or MATLAB. Engineers need to convert the 3D models to universal CAD standards like IFC, STEP, or IGES to collaborate in modern BIM workflows. Generally, only the original authoring software has the algorithms required to export this data correctly.
