About BSW files
The .BSW extension represents a collision of two distinct technical worlds: scientific spectroscopy and structural steel detailing. Most commonly (67%), a .BSW file contains raw scan data generated by Varian (now Agilent) UV-Vis-NIR spectrophotometers using Cary WinUV software. These files are binary data logs that are notoriously difficult to parse without the original instrument software, creating a bottleneck for researchers who need to analyze spectral data in third-party tools like Excel, MATLAB, or Origin. Users often resort to tedious export functions within the lab to get this data into a usable CSV or TXT format for publication.
Alternatively, in the construction sector, a .BSW file is a 3D model used by StruWalker, a visualization tool for the now-legacy StruCad steel detailing software (originally by AceCad, later influenced by StruMIS). These files act as lightweight "walker" files, allowing stakeholders to navigate a 3D steel structure without needing the full CAD suite. The friction here is obsolescence; as StruCad has been largely superseded by modern BIM tools like Tekla Structures, accessing these legacy models is a challenge. For archiving or migration, these 3D models should be converted to interoperable formats like IFC, DXF, or DWG to ensure the engineering data remains accessible in current BIM environments.
Convert.Guru analyzes your BSW file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert BSW file to DWG, DXF, DGN, RVT, RFA, SKP, 3DM, STEP, IGES, SAT, X_T or X_B, you can use Cary WinUV or similar software from the "Spectroscopy Scan Data" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert SLDASM, DGN, PRT, IAM, X_B, CATPRODUCT, SLDPRT, RVT, ASM, DWG, CATPART or DXF files to BSW, try Cary WinUV or another comparable tool in the "Spectroscopy Scan Data" category.
The BSW Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BSW converter.
