A .FCSTD1 file is an automatic backup created by FreeCAD, an open-source parametric 3D modeler. These files are generated when the 'Save Backup' option is enabled, serving as a failsafe copy of the main FCSTD project file. While identical in internal structure to the primary project file - using standard ZIP compression to bundle XML configurations and geometric data - the numbered suffix prevents most operating systems from recognizing it. This creates a common difficulty where users cannot double-click to open their own backups after a crash or corruption event.
To utilize this file, the most direct method is simply renaming the extension from .FCSTD1 to FCSTD, allowing FreeCAD to recognize and open it natively. For interoperability with other CAD software or for 3D printing, the file must first be opened in FreeCAD and then exported. Common conversion targets include STEP or IGES for engineering collaboration with tools like SolidWorks, STL or 3MF for 3D printing, and OBJ for mesh-based editing in software like Blender.
