About BOK files

The .BOK extension serves two distinct but specialized user groups, often leading to compatibility confusion. The most common use (approx. 69%) is for Shamela E-books, utilized by the Al-Maktaba Al-Shamela software - a comprehensive digital library for Islamic research. Technically, these files are often modified Microsoft Jet Database (MDB) containers storing text and metadata. The primary disadvantage is their dependency on the specific Shamela interface; they are often inaccessible on mobile devices, require specific system locale settings (Arabic) to avoid garbled text, and cannot be opened by standard e-readers like Kindle or Apple Books. To make these texts portable, users typically convert them to PDF for archiving or DOCX for citation and translation.

Alternatively, .BOK files are TestGen Testbanks generated by Pearson Education software. These contain repositories of questions and answers used by instructors to build exams. The constraint here is proprietary lock-in; students cannot open .BOK files directly, and they are not natively supported by Learning Management Systems (LMS) like Canvas or Blackboard. Instructors often need to convert these testbanks to DOCX for manual editing, PDF for printing, or QTI formats for LMS import.

Convert.Guru analyzes your BOK file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted RAR, DBI, PDF, ZIP, BAK, SAV, SCDOC, XLS, HTM, PSD, DOCX, DB and XLSX files.

The BOK Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BOK converter.
