The .BOK file extension is primarily associated with two very different, closed-ecosystem formats: the Shamela E-book Database and the Pearson TestGen Testbank. For Islamic scholars and students, .BOK files store thousands of texts within the Al-Maktaba Al-Shamela desktop software, utilizing the Microsoft Jet Database Engine under the hood. In the academic sector, .BOK files are test question banks distributed by Pearson Education to instructors for creating localized exams.
Both formats present severe usability challenges. Shamela databases are proprietary to a heavy, Windows-only application, making them difficult to read on mobile devices or modern web browsers. Pearson TestGen files are heavily locked down to prevent academic cheating, requiring an instructor login and a dedicated desktop app. Because these files are closed and proprietary, standard online converters consistently fail to process them.
When extracting data, the best target formats are universal standards: CSV for database tables, TXT for raw text extraction, or PDF and DOCX for readable exams. Note that converting test banks often results in the loss of proprietary randomization logic.
