About JOU files

The .JOU file extension is primarily used for software journal logs. These are plain text files that record a sequential history of user actions, system commands, or background processes. High-end engineering platforms like ANSYS Fluent, Autodesk Revit, and Xilinx Vivado automatically generate these files during operation. They are crucial for script execution, crash recovery, and ensuring that complex simulations are reproducible.

Because they consist of standard text, you can open .JOU files with advanced text editors like Notepad++ or Visual Studio Code. However, the syntax inside is proprietary. For example, a Xilinx log uses Tcl scripting, while Fluent uses Scheme commands. The main disadvantage of the .JOU format is that the files can become massive. A complex computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation left running for days can generate a log exceeding hundreds of megabytes, making it highly difficult to open on standard machines or share via email.

Sharing raw journal files with colleagues who lack expensive $5,000 software licenses is impractical. To extract actionable data, conversion is the best workaround. Convert .JOU to TXT for universal readability across any operating system. If the log contains tabular output data, convert it to CSV for easy import into Excel or databases. For archiving or sharing a static, uneditable record of an audit trail, convert it to PDF.

Convert.Guru analyzes your JOU file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted BIT, XCI and XSA files.

The JOU Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our JOU converter.
