About BIF files
The .BIF extension is shared by three distinct, incompatible formats, creating frequent confusion for users.
- BioWare Infinity Engine Archive: Found in classic RPGs like Baldur's Gate, these act as proprietary containers (similar to ZIP) holding game assets like audio, scripts, and tile sets. A major constraint is that they cannot be opened in isolation; they typically require a corresponding
chitin.key file to index the contents. Users often convert these to extract music to WAV or sprites to BMP for modding purposes using tools like NearInfinity. - Roku Base Index Frame: Used by Roku streaming devices, these files contain a sequence of low-resolution thumbnails used for the 'trick-play' feature (visual scrubbing/rewind). These are not playable video files. To view the content, users must extract the internal JPG frames.
- Ventana Slide Image: A high-resolution digital pathology image generated by Roche/Ventana scanners. These files can be massive (gigabytes in size) and are strictly proprietary, often requiring expensive viewing software. For archiving and sharing, medical professionals recommend converting these to standard TIFF or SVS formats.
