About NFI files
The .nfi file extension represents a collision of three distinct computing eras. Historically, it serves as a Browser Component Information File for the now-defunct Netscape Navigator, acting as an index for internal browser data. In modern enthusiast circles, however, it is most critical as a Dreambox Firmware Image. These files are proprietary disk images used to flash, update, or restore Dream Multimedia satellite receivers (set-top boxes). They typically contain a bootloader (Second Stage Loader) and a compressed file system (often SquashFS or JFFS2). A third, less accessible variant is the Netflix Information File, which stores encrypted metadata for offline downloads on mobile devices.
For users, the main issue is the proprietary lock-in. A Dreambox .nfi file cannot be opened like a standard ISO or ZIP on Windows or macOS. It requires specialized flashing utilities or a specific browser-based upload process to function. Attempting to open a Netflix .nfi file is futile as it is DRM-protected. For Dreambox files, the best conversion workflow involves unpacking the firmware to extract specific binaries or converting the container to a raw IMG file for analysis in Linux environments.
Convert.Guru analyzes your NFI file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted NFV, NFA, NFS, BIF, IMA, NRG and UDF files.
The NFI Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our NFI converter.
