Convert a file to NFI
To convert other file formats to the "NAND Flash Firmware Dump" file type, you need software like DreamUP or a similar tool.
About NFI files
The .NFI file extension primarily represents a NAND Flash Image containing firmware updates for Dreambox satellite receivers. These files package the Linux-based Enigma2 operating system, bootloader, and root filesystem into a single binary block. A secondary use for .NFI files involves proprietary component files or disk images created by Nero, as well as obsolete component data for Netscape Navigator and local caching files for Netflix.
Converting an .NFI file to a standard format like ISO, IMG, or ZIP is notoriously difficult. The Dreambox firmware is a highly specialized binary dump built for direct hardware flashing. It is proprietary and mapped exclusively to specific receiver architectures. Regular archive software cannot mount or extract these files without specialized Linux scripts (such as nfi-extract). Furthermore, the Nero-based .NFI files suffer from similar closed-ecosystem restrictions, often requiring a paid software license to access the data.
Standard online converters fail to process .NFI files because they are raw partition dumps or proprietary optical data rather than standard documents or media. Often, only the original hardware flashing utility or native software can properly read or export the data.
Convert.Guru analyzes your NFI file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert NFI file to ISO, IMG, DMG, VHD, VMDK, VDI, HDD, QCOW, QCOW2, RAW, VBOX or OVA, you can use DreamUP or similar software from the "Firmware and Disk Image" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert VFD, DMG, OVA, IMA, VBOX, ADF, PVS, VHD, OVF, ISO, DSK or IMG files to NFI, try DreamUP or another comparable tool in the "Firmware and Disk Image" category.
The NFI Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our NFI converter.
