To convert other file formats to the "Game Data Archive" file type, you need software like Microsoft Flight Simulator or a similar tool.
About BGL files
The .bgl extension is shared by two entirely different proprietary file formats. The vast majority of these files are compiled scenery and AI traffic data files used by Microsoft Flight Simulator to render 3D environments, airports, and flight paths. Alternatively, .bgl represents a locked dictionary or glossary database utilized by Babylon Translation Software to store definitions and translations offline.
Both formats present significant disadvantages for users. They are heavily restricted, closed-source binary files. Flight Simulator .bgl files lack native editing support and cannot be viewed or manipulated outside the game engine without complex reverse engineering. Babylon .bgl files are encrypted proprietary databases designed specifically to force users into the Babylon software ecosystem. Neither format is supported by standard text editors, 3D software, or web browsers, making data portability extremely poor.
Users typically need to convert Flight Simulator .bgl files to XML to edit geographic coordinates or extract embedded 3D models into the MDL format. Babylon dictionaries are often converted to standard TXT, CSV, or open-source formats like Stardict to use the glossary data in alternative, ad-free dictionary applications.
Because these are closed, proprietary binary formats, standard online converters fail to process them. Often, only specialized decompilers or the original software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your BGL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert BGL file to OBJ, XML, FBX, MDX, CSV, JSON, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG or CONF, you can use Microsoft Flight Simulator or similar software from the "Simulation Scenery & Glossary Data" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to BGL, try Microsoft Flight Simulator or another comparable tool in the "Simulation Scenery & Glossary Data" category.
The BGL Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BGL converter.
