About BAI files
The .BAI file format typically serves two entirely different purposes. Primarily, it is a Bank Administration Institute (BAI) file, which is a specialized text format used by financial institutions for electronic cash management and reporting account balances. Alternatively, it functions as a BAM alignment index file, generated by tools like SAMtools to allow fast data retrieval from large genomic sequencing datasets in bioinformatics. There is also a rare edge case where a .BAI file acts as a Build2Win Add-In package, which is essentially a standard .ZIP archive. The main disadvantage of financial .BAI files is their rigid, archaic structure. They rely on comma-delimited strings of proprietary transaction codes that are nearly impossible for a human to read natively. Extracting this data usually requires expensive enterprise treasury software. Similarly, bioinformatics .BAI files are purely binary indexes; they are entirely useless without the parent .BAM file and cannot be viewed in standard text editors. To make financial data usable, you must convert it. For spreadsheet analysis, convert .BAI to CSV or Excel (.XLSX) so you can easily sort transaction codes and amounts. For secure archiving or sharing with stakeholders, convert to PDF/A.
