The .BAI extension refers to two critical but distinct data formats: Bank Administration Institute files and BAM Index files.
1. Financial Reporting (BAI/BAI2): This is the standard format for electronic cash management balance reporting, used by banks to transmit transaction data to corporate treasury departments. While technically text-based, the file uses a rigid, code-heavy structure (e.g., 01,Sender,Receiver,YYMMDD...) that is difficult to interpret manually. Finance professionals typically need to convert these files to CSV or XLSX to perform reconciliation in Microsoft Excel or import them into accounting software like QuickBooks.
2. Bioinformatics (BAM Index): In genomics, a .BAI file is a binary index generated by SAMtools to accompany a BAM (Binary Alignment Map) file. It functions exactly like a book's index, allowing viewers like IGV to jump to specific chromosomal regions without loading the entire multi-gigabyte dataset. A common problem is users attempting to "open" the .BAI file expecting sequence data; however, it contains no biological reads itself and is useless without the corresponding BAM file.
