About AXD files
The .AXD extension typically represents one of two distinct file types, creating confusion for users who encounter them.
Most commonly, an .AXD file is an ASP.NET Web Handler file (often named WebResource.axd or ScriptResource.axd). These are not standard static files but dynamic responses generated by a server running Microsoft ASP.NET. Users often end up with these files on their hard drive when a browser download fails to interpret the correct MIME type - meaning you intended to save a PDF document or JPG image, but the server handed you an .AXD wrapper instead. In this state, the file is unreadable by standard viewers, effectively locking you out of the content (images, scripts, or documents) hidden inside.
Alternatively, in engineering environments, .AXD refers to a vector drawing created by IGE+XAO SEE Electrical. These are proprietary CAD files used for circuit diagrams and wiring schematics. The major drawback here is interoperability; these files cannot be opened by standard CAD tools like AutoCAD or viewing software like Adobe Acrobat without conversion.
To solve these accessibility issues, the recommended conversion workflow depends on the source:
- For Web Downloads: Determine the true file type (often by analyzing the file header) and convert/rename it to its intended format, such as PDF (for documents), JPG or PNG (for images), or JS (for scripts).
- For CAD Drawings: Convert the proprietary .AXD to PDF for easy sharing and archiving, or to DXF and DWG to ensure the schematics can be edited in other CAD software.
Convert.Guru analyzes your AXD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted ADX, PDF, JPG, HTML, DOWNLOAD, DWG, ZIP, PS, CSS, JPEG, TXT, FSA and AVIF files.
The AXD Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our AXD converter.
